Citizens Actions and Responsibilities (LO3)

Citizens are instruments of change in the modern world; they are the ones in charge of carrying actions that will eventually shape our society and our planet. The following activities are going to help you discover the power and influence of individuals in social and environmental changes; additionally, you will find out what attributes and attitude an idoneous citizen of the world should have. 
Activity #1 History Makers
Activity #2 Responsibility

 

In the world's history, there have been many real heroes that stood up and fought against injustice; people that have sacrificed their lives in order to take action to protect human rights and dignity. With this activity, you will have the opportunity to explore the lives of individuals that fought for the respect of the fundamental human rights in the world. 

 

Instructions:

 

1. Choose a History Maker listed below (Click on the name of the person to access the online biography)

- Malala Yousafzai

- Martin Luther King Jr

-Mahatma Gandhi

Oskar Schindler

- Al Gore

 

2. Read your History Maker's biography (you can also watch the video on the same website) and then answer the questions below in a new post under the picture of your character in this PADLET.

 

- What's special about this person?

- Which Human Right was he/she trying to protect?

- What methods (strategies) did he/she use to ensure the protection and respect of the human rights?

 

3. Use Past Simple tense on your answers

This second stage will take you to analyze more in detail the actions the History Makers took for them to defeat the difficulties they faced in their contexts. For this reason, you will have to read what your classmates wrote about the other people from the list in activity one so you can determine differences and similar aspects in their actions. 

 

Instructions:

 

1. Read your classmates posts about the other History Makers.

2. Compare and contrast their actions with the ones your chosen character carried out.

3. Go to the forum number two "Our Responsibilities and create a new post with the answers to the questions posed for this forum. 

Activity #3 What does it take to be a Good Citizen of the World

After the research and analysis of the History Makers' lives and actions, you must have gained some ideas about the aspects, attitudes, and attributes the Citizens of the world should have; therefore, in this final activity you are going to develop an oral presentation in which you can present your own perspectives and ideas. 

 

Instructions:

 

1. Before you start gathering your ideas, visit the IB's Learner Profile for you to gain vocabulary that might help you in the development of your oral production.

2.  Draft in a piece of paper the lines and ideas you are going to share in your speech. 

3. When your speech is finally done go to Vocaroo

4. Once the final version of your recorded speech is ready, download it and uploaded in the box below, or simply paste the link of your audio in the same box.
