Perhaps you have heard about the different conflicts and problems our planet and the modern society are experiencing, or maybe, these issues have somehow been discussed in class, but is known about the existence of these issues enough for you to be considered a Global Citizen? The following activities will guide you to understand better the different conflicts and problems the globe is facing, and what actions you as a young member of the world’s society can take in order to help the planet.

Understanding Global Issues (LO2)

Main Goal of the activity :

To design a basic action plan for teenagers to help the world overcome different global issues.

Activity #1 What are the current main critical Global Concerns?

Objectives:

 - To use effectively graphic organizers to visualize important ideas from a text and represent relationships among these with a general topic (see unit 11A from Reading Explorers 3)

-To distinguish main ideas from supporting details.

In this stage you will learn about the United Nations' initiative called "Sustainable Development Goals", and the best way to do it is by adapting to your reading practice strategies for you to identify/determine main ideas (revise unit 2A).  Therefore, for this activity, you will create a Word Web  in which you will show those ideas from texts you consider are important.

Instructions:

1. Go to http://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/

2. Choose 4 issues out of the 17 goals, read their introductory information (identify principal ideas and supporting ideas)

3. Word Web: create a draft of the graphic organizer seen in unit 11A using the principal ideas and details from the 4 issues you selected previously.

4. Create your final version of your word web in POPPLET.       (click here to see tutorial).

5. Share the final version of your word web with your teacher and your classmates via email.

Activity #2 Sustainable Development Goals

Objective: To activate students' previous knowledge

Here you will think of those difficulties the modern society and our own planet are facing currently. In order to do so, you must participate in a Forum that will help you to share with your classmates what you know and remember about some  Global Issues. Read the following instructions for you to develop properly this activity:

1.Go to the forum window of this site.

2. Sign up with your email and type your password.

3. select the Global Issues Forum.

4. Read and think about the question "What do you think are the major global concerns?"

5. Create a new post in which you will write a comment with your thoughts and knowledge.

Objectives:

- To use transition words for connecting a sequence of ideas in a paragraph.

- To be capable of working effectively with my peers in order to achieve a common goal.

Teamwork: taking into account the word webs you and your classmates created in the previous stage, you will work with one of your classmates in a short proposal for the class to help the world stop one of the issues listed below (click on the global issue you want to work on for you to have access to specific information about it)

- Inequality.

- Poverty

- Climate Change

- Hunger

- Energy

- water crisis.

Instructions:

1. Revise the transition words seen in Unit 6B

2. Think about possible and achievable actions you can take in order to help the world to stop the issue you have chosen (think at least on three actions).

3. You and your partner must create a paragraph in which you explain to the class your proposal (using transition words, and paragraph writing conventions). Once your paragraph is ready, you must post it as a new comment in the Global Issues Forum.

4. Read the other teams' proposal and comment their posts.
